False news reaches 1,500 people six times faster than the truth on social media
Falsehoods are 70% more likely to be shared than accurate stories — driven by human psychology, not bots
Misinformation & disinformation ranked the top global risk for the second consecutive year
In 2018, researchers at MIT analyzed 126,000 news stories shared by 3 million people and found that false information spreads farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in every category of information. That statistic — highlighted in the documentary The Social Dilemma — has only become more urgent.
Since then, generative AI has made it cheaper and easier to produce convincing disinformation at scale. Deepfake fraud increased by 1,740% in North America in just one year. Social media platforms have cut content moderation teams while algorithmic amplification has accelerated. The World Economic Forum now ranks misinformation as the number one global risk — for the second year in a row.
Now more than ever, it's important that the news we consume — beyond entertainment — comes from sources committed to accountability and accuracy. What happens globally trickles down to what affects you locally. These are the channels I turn to for signal over noise.
